THERE'S AN IDEA: Star Bright Who needs Hollywood when there are Movieoke nights with friends?

THE IDEA Finally, there's a karaoke offspring for those who can't sing. In the East Village of New York City, movie lovers are performing scenes from their favorite films every Wednesday night in a basement club called The Den of Cin, which is, appropriately enough, located right below a video store. When doing movieoke, you choose what movie and scene you want to act out, the host marches upstairs to find your movie on DVD, the sound is muted, the subtitles are activated, the scene is located, and you're good to go. You stand in front of a large screen as the picture is projected onto you, and you read the script from the reference video monitor.
Movieoke creator and hostess Anastasia Fite says the performance styles vary from eerily accurate to inappropriate parody. "People are paying homage as often as they are making fun," she says.

WHY BOSTON NEEDS IT Fite says she came up with the idea for movieoke two years ago after she realized that much of her daily dialogue is devoted to movie quotes. How many dudes in your social circle drop The Big Lebowski references every time you're yapping at a bar? Movieoke would give them an outlet. And just think about how great it would be to see the "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" scene from Dirty Dancing performed by any of your coworkers.

PROBABILITY Start practicing. Jamaica Plain's Milky Way already hosts successful karaoke nights, and B. J. Ray, the club's booking and entertainment manager, says he loves the movieoke idea. "It's something we'd definitely consider," he says. "We've always tried to keep karaoke on the edge."
Also, Fite says she's working on making a movieoke machine that would be easy for clubs to use. If only we could be so lucky. "You've got to ask yourself a question: `Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"
